[...] A common thread through Government statements recently has been that the severity of Ireland’s recession - described by the IMF last week as the worst in the advanced world - is due to Ireland’s openness and reliance on global trade and investment. On the face of it, this argument has some merit: after all, global data do show some link between openness and the depth of the recession this year. [...]

Iceland - 300,000 people not worth mentioning.

India - open and with a population similar to Europe seems to indicate open is not the problem.

Mysterious is Central America. I would have thought remitance nations would be in trouble. Perhaps they have something going on.

Poland, Greece are doing well, wow?

Hi Tullaman,

I went off and did that regression - openness and income per capita are the two things that stand out as strongly significant. So higher income and more open countries - accounting for economy size and how fast they grew in the global boom - are falling faster this year than other countries.

The gorey details are available upon request!

Hi Tullaman,

Thanks for visiting and thanks for the comment.
Sounds like it's time for some regression-ing, so we can hold factors like income levels constant... I might come back to this on next Wednesday's 'World Economy' post.

I dunno Ronan. Take out Malaysia and the 4 other (more open) countries to the right and it just looks like a blob (ie no correlation whatsoever).

Maybe you could say _very_ open countries are now performing badly.

Maybe stripping out less advance economies would make the argument more compelling. But really I don't see it - it's just something the Brians like to repeat!
